Principal Power Hardware Engineer

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and is responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission.

As Microsoft’s cloud business continues to grow, delivering new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume, with high quality, and at the lowest cost is critical. The CHSE (Cloud Hardware Systems Engineering) team plays a key role in defining and improving the operational measures of success in hardware manufacturing.

We are currently seeking a Principal Power Hardware Engineer to join our team.

Required / Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years of technical engineering experience
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree in the above fields AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience
  • OR equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of experience in datacenter and xPU power delivery design/architecture
  • 7+ years of experience designing multi-phase buck/buck-boost regulators, digital PWM controllers, bus converters, LDOs, PMICs, charge pumps, ADCs & DACs

Security Requirements

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements is necessary
  • This includes passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Additional / Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in a relevant field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience
  • OR Master’s Degree AND 8+ years experience
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree AND 12+ years experience OR equivalent
  • Expertise in high frequency magnetics design for power electronics
  • Strong knowledge of control theory, compensation, stability analysis, and phase margin
  • Experience with EM simulation tools such as:
    • Sigrity’s PowerDC
    • PowerSI
    • SiWave or equivalent
  • Experience designing PCBs with tools like Cadence
  • Strong analytical and lab skills
  • Working knowledge of EMI and safety standards
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple cross-functional teams and make informed trade-offs

Compensation

  • Base Pay Range (U.S.): $139,900 – $274,800 per year
  • San Francisco Bay Area & NYC Metro: $188,000 – $304,200 per year
  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation
