Principal Security Engineer

About Vay

Imagine being able to say, “I helped launch the future of transportation.”
At Vay, we’re redefining urban mobility with our world-first Remote Driving technology. Customers simply request a vehicle, and it arrives on public roads with no driver inside.

Already operating in Las Vegas and expanding rapidly with strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab, our mission is to replace private car ownership with a faster, cleaner, and more convenient door-to-door mobility experience.

We’ve already launched driverless vehicles on public roads in both Europe and the United States, built one of the largest commercial driverless fleets in the Western world, partnered with Kodiak to bring remote-driving technology to autonomous trucks, and completed tens of thousands of customer trips—with much more growth ahead.

About the Role

As a Principal Security Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the cybersecurity foundation of Vay’s vehicle platforms and remote driving ecosystem. Working across automotive security, embedded systems, safety-critical development, and engineering leadership, you’ll ensure security is embedded throughout the product lifecycle.

This is a highly cross-functional role that combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical expertise. You’ll help define security architecture, assess risks, drive secure engineering practices, and collaborate across engineering teams to build safe, scalable mobility solutions.

  • Perform security risk assessments and maintain Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment (TARA) documentation.
  • Define cybersecurity requirements and work with cross-functional teams to implement effective security controls.
  • Partner with Safety, Systems, Embedded Software, and Validation teams to integrate security throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Lead security architecture discussions and influence system-level technical decisions.
  • Create and continuously improve security testing and validation strategies for vehicle and remote driving systems.
  • Support secure over-the-air (OTA) update mechanisms and secure communication architectures.
  • Represent cybersecurity topics in internal design reviews and external technical discussions.
  • Build scalable security processes that support the continued growth of Vay’s commercial vehicle platform.

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in cybersecurity engineering.
  • Embedded Systems: At least 2 years of experience working on automotive, robotics, IoT, or other safety-critical embedded products.
  • Automotive Security: Strong understanding of automotive cybersecurity principles, vehicle networks, and OTA update mechanisms.
  • Risk Assessment: Experience performing security risk assessments and maintaining TARA work products.
  • Industry Standards: Familiarity with ISO 21434, UNECE WP.29 R155/R156, and related automotive cybersecurity frameworks.
  • Secure Development: Understanding of embedded software development and secure software engineering practices.
  • Cryptography: Knowledge of cryptographic concepts and secure communication protocols.
  • Risk Management: Ability to identify vulnerabilities, prioritize risks, and develop practical mitigation strategies.
  • Collaboration: Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and cross-functional leadership skills.
  • Leadership: Comfortable balancing strategic planning with hands-on technical execution in a fast-paced environment.
