The energy trading unit optimizes assets across all markets, balances renewables, and executes proprietary trading. We trade short-term power algorithmically across an expanding geographical scope. Our technical team includes veteran software engineers, leading AI experts, and experienced power trading professionals.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Team Lead Data Engineer to lead our data team (currently ~4 engineers) and play a pivotal role in scaling Terra One’s data platform. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines technical ownership, architectural direction, and team enablement.
You will collaborate closely with ML and trading domain leads to ensure data is reliable, timely, and production-ready across all systems.

Responsibilities
Data Architecture & Management
- Design and maintain scalable, cost-efficient data models, storage, and processing systems (BigQuery, Cloud Storage, etc.).
- Collaborate with internal and external data providers to ensure smooth data onboarding.
- Ensure data accessibility and usability across the organization via well-structured repositories and APIs.
Data Pipelines & Processing
- Develop, maintain, and optimize automated pipelines from various data sources (APIs, sFTP, web scraping, etc.).
- Implement robust ETL/ELT workflows for real-time and batch processing using Airflow or similar tools.
- Ensure data freshness, reliability, and completeness across the full lifecycle.
Data Quality & Observability
- Build monitoring, validation, and alerting systems to ensure high data quality and integrity.
- Develop dashboards and internal data products that support analytics, ML, and trading teams.
- Analyze datasets to identify inconsistencies, anomalies, and optimization opportunities.
Cross-Team Integration
- Deliver reliable datasets and feature pipelines for predictive and decision models in collaboration with ML and trading teams.
- Contribute to deployment workflows, model feedback loops, and real-time data interfaces.
- Support the design and scaling of Terra One’s cloud-based data infrastructure.
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and mentor a team of data engineers, fostering a learning-oriented, high-performance culture.
- Define and execute the technical roadmap for the data platform in alignment with company strategy.
- Oversee day-to-day operations to ensure reliability, cost efficiency, and long-term maintainability.
What We Expect from You
- Strong Python expertise, including experience with pandas, dask, and workflow frameworks like Airflow or Prefect.
- Experience designing and operating data infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery, Cloud Storage) and integrating with streaming systems (e.g., Kafka).
- Solid understanding of ETL/ELT architectures, data modeling, and workflow orchestration.
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB), including schema design and optimization.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Terraform, GitHub Actions, and modern data ops practices.
- Strong version control skills, especially with Git.
- Strong understanding of data quality, observability, and cost optimization principles.
Who You Are
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Environmental Informatics, Renewable Energy, Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, or related fields — or equivalent practical experience.
- Proven experience in data engineering or data infrastructure with high-availability production systems.
- Strong software engineering foundation with a focus on scalable and maintainable architecture.
- Hands-on leader who mentors others and sets technical direction.
- Structured, self-driven, and able to balance strategic and operational priorities.
- Collaborative communicator thriving in cross-functional environments.
- Motivated by impact and purpose, especially in energy system decarbonization.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience or strong interest in energy or power markets (trading, renewables, grid operations).
- Background in startups or high-growth environments with scaling experience.
- Familiarity with data compliance and security topics.
- Based in Berlin or open to relocation.
