About the Role

Our Global Bank team is building the infrastructure behind SumUp’s digital banking experience. The Transfers Gateway squad powers how money moves in and out of SumUp accounts, handling millions of transactions, ensuring compliance, and integrating with third-party banking partners.

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll work on distributed systems processing real-time payments at scale. Your work will support millions of small businesses across Europe.

What You’ll Do

• Build and maintain banking integrations for SEPA and UK payment schemes.
• Work on backend systems processing millions of transactions with a focus on performance and reliability.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end features — from architecture to incident resolution.
• Participate in technical discussions and roadmap planning.
• Improve automation and monitoring to keep systems reliable and error-free.
• Learn about payment schemes and regulations to design robust, maintainable systems.

You’ll Be Great for This Role If You Have

• Professional experience as a Backend Engineer.
• Proficiency in Golang (Kotlin is a plus) in production environments.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases and cloud infrastructure.
• Understanding of system architecture, data modeling, RESTful and event-driven APIs.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and version control systems like Git.
• Clean, maintainable, and well-structured coding practices.
• A curious mindset and eagerness to learn and collaborate with your team.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience in fintech, payments, or banking.
• Knowledge of Kafka, PostgreSQL, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Grafana.
• Experience with scalable, fault-tolerant systems.
• Proficiency in using observability tools to troubleshoot proactively.
